Each box is one note, with its fingering underneath: filled holes are covered, a half-filled hole is half covered or pinched. Wider boxes are longer notes. A ′ mark means the higher octave, so D′ is high D. Bar lines are drawn as thin rules.

Fingerings for the notes in Molly Malone

Hole 0 is the thumb hole on the back. Holes 1 to 3 are for the left hand, 4 to 7 for the right. These are Baroque (English) fingerings.

How to practise it

"Cockles and mussels" repeats a quick B up to a long high D, then C. For the D, lift the thumb and left index finger and put down the left middle finger in one movement, then cover the thumb again for C.

Learn one line at a time. Play it slowly until every note is clean, then join it to the next line.

About the tune

The earliest known printing is from Boston in 1876, and a London edition of 1884 names James Yorkston of Edinburgh as its writer. There is no evidence that Molly was a real person, but Dublin put up her statue in 1988.
