Piper's Songbook

About Piper's Songbook

Piper's Songbook is a recorder course for Android made by Arcadian Cloud. The app listens to you play through the phone's microphone, works out which note it heard, and tells you which finger to move when a note is wrong. This website has the free part: songs with letter notes and fingerings, and a fingering chart.

Where the music comes from

Every tune on this site is public domain: traditional, or written before 1900. We copy only the pitches and rhythms, never a modern editor's layout or modern lyrics. Each song page says which source its notes were checked against. For the tunes that are also in the app, the website reads the same transcription the app uses, so the two can't disagree.

Songs are written in the key that suits a beginner on a soprano recorder, so some are transposed from the key they are usually sung in.

Where the fingerings come from

The fingering chart follows the soprano recorder charts from Dolmetsch, the American Recorder Society and Yamaha, which agree for every note we show. The German fingerings come from the same makers' German charts.
